For our client, we are looking for a Java Backend Engineer (senior).

The Digital Products department is the place where digital products take shape. In close collaboration with the various brands, we develop new products; from websites to social media campaigns and mobile apps.

You will be part of an extremely dynamic environment where you are jointly responsible for the realization of a well-developed digital offering that appeals to a large and diverse audience on a daily basis. Leveraging your expertise, you will contribute to a high-quality digital portfolio in a rapidly evolving context.

You have proven experience in designing, building, and maintaining scalable backend services. You have a strong Java background, work smoothly in modern cloud and CI/CD environments, and actively contribute to robust APIs, performant data streams, and reliable integrations.

You have experience with event-based architectures and can justify technical choices within a complex digital product environment. Experience with CQRS is a clear asset.

What will you do with us?

You are a member of a cross-functional agile team that aims to build a flawless media experience and contributes to the development of reliable, scalable, and maintainable backend solutions. Together with your colleagues, you will build digital products end-to-end, from analysis and design to implementation, monitoring, and support in production. You actively help improve existing backend services, focusing on performance, stability, security, and scalability. Design and implement backend components, APIs, and integrations within an event-based architecture. Collaborate with developers, architects, product owners, and business stakeholders to align technical solutions with product objectives. Identify technical risks, propose improvements, and actively contribute to code quality, observability, and operational excellence. Set up and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated checks, and technical quality standards. Coach colleagues and share backend expertise within and outside the team.

Who are you?

You can translate technical choices into robust backend architecture, taking into account scalability, maintainability, security, and operational reliability. You translate product needs and stories into clear technical implementations and contribute to API contracts, data models, and integration patterns. You identify technical trends, risks, and improvement opportunities in backend development, event-based architectures, and cloud-native engineering. You write quality, well-tested code and take responsibility for solutions from design to production. You take the lead in technical improvements and guide the team in engineering best practices, pragmatic documentation, and knowledge sharing. You preferably have experience in a digital product environment. You communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders and can explain complex technical topics clearly.

Furthermore, you have proven experience in:

Backend engineering in an agile environment (8 years)

Java development (8 years)

NodeJS / Typescript development (5 years)

Event-based architectures (5 years)

API design and integration patterns (5 years)

CI/CD, monitoring, and operational support of backend services (3 years)

Atlassian Suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, ...) (3 years)

CQRS experience, preferably Go experience or interest is a plus

Proven Backend engineering experience in an agile product environment - 5 Years

Proven experience in developing JAVA-based applications - 5 Years

Proven experience with API design and integration patterns - 5 Years

Proven experience with consultancy assignments - 5 Years

Proven experience with event-based architectures - 5 Years

Proven education with certification or equivalent by experience in programming languages and environments such as Java/J2EE, …

Proven CQRS experience

Proven experience in leading a development team and coaching developers.

Proven experience in programming tasks very smoothly: coding, testing, and debugging.

Proven experience with Atlassian Suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, ...) - 3 Years

Proven experience with CI/CD, monitoring, and operational support of backend services - 3 Years

Proven experience with NodeJS / TypeScript development - 5 Years

Proven knowledge and experience of Agile development methodology, with the ability to take a leading role.

Language requirement: Dutch-speaking at European CEFR - level C2.
